The University of Georgia Graduate School Consistently Ranks in the Top 20 for Doctoral Degrees Conferred upon African Americans!




Mission Statement

The Graduate School aims to promote excellence in graduate education by recruiting top students to the University of Georgia. While striving to increase overall enrollment, the Graduate School also seeks to promote diversity by encouraging enrollment of students from historically underrepresented groups and qualified programs abroad.

Every effort is made to facilitate a smooth transition for new students through their graduation as well as heighten the graduate experience of all students. The Graduate School sponsors academic, social, and professional programs and activities, and serves as an advocate for students and faculty.

We encourage students to use our resources at some point during their academic and professional career. Our office is ready to assist you.

Nationally, UGA ranks high in number of degrees awarded:

Doctoral Degrees

  • 13th nationally in the total number of doctoral degrees conferred on African Americans
  • 4th nationally in the number of doctoral degrees in the physical sciences awarded to African Americans
  • 7th nationally in the number of doctoral degrees in psychology conferred on African Americans
  • 12th for all English language and literature degrees awarded to all minority students
  • 29th for all minority students in Education
  • 16th for African Americans in the health sciences
  • 17th for Asian Americans earning doctoral degrees in the physical sciences
  • 15th in total doctorates in psychology awarded to Latinos
  • 46th for all doctoral degrees awarded to all minority students

Masters Degrees

  • 18th forin total number of masters degrees in all disciplines awarded to African Americans
  • 23rd for African Americans earning journalism and communication degrees

Faculty

  • The University ranks 5th among the nation’s top 125 research universities in the number of tenured and tenure-line African American faculty, according to Diverse Issues in Higher Education
